When a pandemic settles down after only two or three years, that usually goes along with a terrifying case fatality rate (think: Spanish Flu).
My goal in writing this article is not to include a description of information that you will already find on a few specialized websites, nor is it to scare you any more than you already are. What if the pandemic lasted indefinitely… How are five years? How about ten years?
Without a question, we will then follow a path far different from what we might picture today.
Our society will be hit by deep impacts in 5 years, which will have socioeconomic implications.
What we now perceive to be slowdowns in some businesses might quickly turn into outright failures. Seriously, who makes economic predictions for more than five or ten years? No man, realistically. No one puts their capital on such a shaky horizon.
A long second wave could start to raise questions about, say, real estate finance as early as February or March 2021 in some cases.
The only idea I’m sticking to in this paper and the rationale that follows is the efficacy and agility of government actors in crisis management. To date, Asia has done an excellent job of containing the problem.
China has now recovered and is benefiting from the recession. This event would soon produce a winner for the entire continent of Asia. A long scenario just serves to emphasize what is already obvious.
I’ve wanted to make a list of three big realities that, if this crisis continues for another five years or so, would have long-term implications for the world’s organisation. These are the facts in chronological order: fiscal, demographic, and geopolitical.
